My Life Since 1957: I attended Iowa U receiving a BA and Occupational Therapy (OT) degrees. My first job was at Los Angeles County General Hospital where I worked as an OT in Orthopedic Pediatrics and the Burn Unit. I decided I wanted to see the world so I joined the US Air Force and for the next 30 years, see it I did! My first assignment was Scott AFB, IL, where I met my husband, Don, who was an AF pilot just returning from a tour in Turkey. After two years at Scott, we went to Travis AFB, CA, where, for 11 years I worked as an OT in the Mental Health field. In '71, Don was sent to the Philippines (PI), where he flew medical air evacuation missions out of Viet Nam. In 1971, I flew to the PI and we were married. First at the US Embassy in Tokyo, honeymooned in Bangkok and returned to the PI for a church wedding at Clark Air Base. I returned to Travis and he joined me six months later. Don retired in '75 with 30 years in the AF.
In '79 we went to Maxwell AFB, AL (Montgomery) where for a year I attended Command and Staff College. Our follow on was to Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX (San Antonio). In '80 the AF Medical Service developed a new program requiring all personnel to be trained in combat medicine. Ten of us were selected to provide training to all AF medical personnel worldwide. I changed career fields from OT to Chief, Medical Readiness and traveled for a year training in the US, Europe and Asia. As a result of the exposure to AF senior leaders, I was selected to be the first female, non administrator to the job as Executive Officer to the Air Force Surgeon General (SG) in D.C. I remained there for five years. During that tour I was promoted to Colonel (0-6). The job was a thrill a minute and one that I will always cherish. In '88 I became the first female, non-physician medical commander in the USAF. Four years at Brooks AFB, TX (S.A.) as Clinic Commander was followed by an assignment as the 12th Medical Group Commander at Randolph AFB, TX (S.A.) The attached photo nicely represents the benefits I enjoyed as a Group Commander :-) This was my retirement photo. (See below).
Since retirement in '94, Don and I have traveled extensively. Our daughter Donna and husband live in Oklahoma City. Our son Barry (Retired Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer), wife, son Joe and daughter Sarah live in Hamden CT. The distance is regrettable as our grandchildren seemed to grow up between each visit. We do manage to get together on a regular basis.
We will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this December.
My Life Now: Wondering how I ever had time to work. Living in San Antonio and enjoying all that is to be done. Fitting in travel to new locations several times a year plus my yearly trek home which is always my favorite.
