After high school I went to MCJC for the 1957-58 and 58-59 school years. Since I didn't attend college in the fall of 1959, for financial reasons, I was drafted into the U. S. Army and reported for duty on 2 Dec.1959. After Basic Training and Advanced Training I was stationed in Quincy, Massachusetts for the duration of my tour. While in the service I skied the slopes of Vermont and New Hampshire in the winter time and during the summer months I sailed in and around Boston Harbor and Cape Cod in a Star Sailboat which I bought with an army buddy. My tour of duty was extended and I was discharged to Stand-By Reserves on 1 March 1962.
In the fall of 1962 I attended the State College of IA, now know as the University of Northern Iowa, UNI. In the spring of 1964 graduated with a BA degree in Education with an emphasis in physics and chemistry
On August 2, 1964 I married Mavis Jean Braun from Grafton, IA.
In the fall of 1964 I started my 36 year science teaching career in Sioux City, IA. In the spring of 1964 I came back to the Clear Lake area to help my mom take care of my dad. We moved to Britt, IA in the fall of 1966 where I taught high school Chemistry and Physics and later added Electronics and Principles of Technology which were both offered to students as a post secondary enrollment option.
In the summer of 1970 I became a Fellow of the National Science Foundation; and Mavis and I both went back to UNI for grad classes and received our MA degrees the spring of 1971. I received my degree in Science Education and she received hers in Elementary Reading.
Since 1957 I have done a lot of interesting part time activities and hobbies. I took pilots training and obtained my Private Pilot's license, was the Britt Boy Scout Master for a number of years, have hiked in the Big Horn Mts. of Wyoming, canoed in the Boundary Waters area of MN., fished in Canadian Waters each summer for 42 years, and traveled North America in a motor home and pickup camper. For quite a few years I had a dark room in my basement to develop black & white pictures. This was very convenient when I was the advisor for the HS Annual Staff. For 12 years I worked for Pioneer International in the summers as a supervisor in their detasseling fields. I've been active in my church and served as vice president, president, and financial treasurers. I am presently a member of the Hancock Country Conservation Board and have served as president and am presently the secretary.
Mavis and I have two children, Jared & Sarah, ages 38 & 35 , and three grandchildren, Chelsea, Carrie, and Cole, ages 14, 10, and 3. Our son & his family live in Appleton, WI, and our daughter and her son live in Rapid City, SD. So, we are about half way between our two kids.
Mavis ( an elementary teacher) and I both retired at the end of the 1999-2000 school year. A couple of months later a former student enticed me to work for him. My jobs at his businesses are varied, but I have the official title of Customer Relations Manager for the 6 Pritchard Family Auto Stores. Computer work and dealing with the American made auto companies has been both interesting and challenging.
Hobbies: At the present time : hunting, fishing, woodworking, reading, antiquing, & traveling.
